Neve Shalom/Wahat al-Salam

Israel

Neve Shalom/Wahat al-Salam – Hebrew and Arabic for "Oasis of Peace" – was jointly founded in 1969 by Israeli Jews and Palestinian-Israeli Arabs to show that the two peoples can live together peacefully and share the power and the land. Since then, 60 families have moved to the village, a beacon of hope in a war-torn region.

Five educational institutions for peace have been developed there based on the belief that education is one of the most important ways to create peaceful communities. The School for Peace has received many awards for developing a unique model of peace-building dialogue between groups in conflict. The nursery and primary school has developed a bilingual and bi-national education, which has been imitated by other schools in the country. A pluralistic spiritual center fosters dialogue between different religions and the "Nadi" youth club is a meeting place for the next generation of peace builders. An international college for a masters programme in Peace and Conflict Studies is in process.
